1The American space agency NASA is looking to private industry to build lunar landers.
2When completed, the spacecraft will be the first to take astronauts to the surface of the moon in almost 50 years.
3NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine announced last week that three businesses will develop, build and fly the lunar landers.
4The three are SpaceX from California; Blue Origin of Washington State; and Dynetics of Alabama.
5Dynetics is part of Leidos, the business formerly known as Science Applications International Corporation.
6Altogether, the space agency has agreed to pay the three companies a total of $967 million for the first 10 months of the project.
7The goal is to return astronauts to the moon in 2024.
8Bridenstine said, "This is the last piece that we need in order to get to the moon" by 2024.
9He noted it will be the first lunar lander since NASA's Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

25By learning how to live and work on the moon, NASA will be better able to eventually send astronauts to Mars, Bridenstine said.
26In a video call with reporters, Elon Musk of SpaceX noted the "potential for an incredibly exciting future in space."
27Dynetics vice president of space systems, Kim Doering, said her team is excited not just about 2024 but the long-term lunar economy.
28Blue Origin's chief Bob Smith was among those pleased with the announcement.
